World read aloud day

Thursday, February 1, 2018 was World Read Aloud Day! To celebrate, John Joy Elementary was visited by real authors of children’s books via Skype! The authors read their stories aloud and allowed the students to ask questions. The Skype sessions were done in the library with the help of Library Media Specialist Nicole Chase Iverson and PC Specialist, Technology Integration Maryann Urbanik.

Author Shelly Becker, who wrote the book "Even Superheroes Have Bad Days" was thrilled that Mrs.Mucurio and Mrs.Darcangelo and their Special Education 3rd grade classes dressed up like superheros from her book! Becker told the students the inspiring story of how it took 11 years for her to get her book published and she had to edit it over 17 times, but she never gave up!

Marcie Colleen, Author of "Love, Triangle" Skyped the students all the way from San Diego, California where it was early in the morning. She had her cup of coffee in an "I Love NY" cup and shared with the students that she grew up not too far from Rome, in Syracuse, New York.

It was a memorable and motivating experience for all!
