6th graders in Mrs. Guiliano’s class at John E. Joy had a chance to “visit” with author Dusti Bowling on Tuesday, November 27th.

Bowling is the author of “Insignificant Events in the Life of a Cactus,” a novel about three teens with serious disabilities who form an unlikely friendship as they struggle to cope with everyday life. With its themes of belonging, tolerance, and friendship, “Insignificant Events in the Life of a Cactus” has earned praise from multiple organizations since its publication in 2017. Among its many accolades, it is a “Reading the West” Award Winner. It was added to the Library of Congress’s 52 Great Reads List for 2018.

Students have been reading the novel along with a partner class in Indiana. With the help of Library Media Specialist, Mrs. Iverson, students have been using FlipGrid to record and post ongoing video discussions as they progress through their reading. Soon, the students in Rome and Indiana will meet up for a live Google Hangout to share their final thoughts with each other about the book.

During their “hangout” with the book’s author, students had the opportunity to ask lots of questions about the book and the writing process. Ms. Bowling shared her inspiration for the novel and gave students insights into the publishing process. She also shared a glimpse out her window into the sunny and 75-degree Arizona weather. Rome students reciprocated by sharing the snowy view from the library windows! And, best of all...students learned that the sequel to “Insignificant Events in the Life of a Cactus” is in the works and will be published in September of 2019.

Thank you to Nicole Iverson for this great story!
