Athletes and their families had the opportunity to meet the new RFA varsity football coach, Charles (Jake) DerCola on Thursday, March 29th at RFA. On hand was Rome City School District Athletic Director, Michael Stamboly and the coaching staff. Families signed in and were given a handout of the coach’s information and details about the upcoming season.

“When we recruit an athlete, one of the first things I do is ask if he plays multiple sports? If he says yes that means we have a true athlete on our hands. Some of the best athletes play multiple sports,” said DerCola.

He went on to say it is important to be a young gentleman, on and off the field. DerCola’s coaching philosophy includes four major components: Teaching, Development, Motivate and Support. “That is what I am going to instill in my coaching staff all the way down,” said DerCola. “I am not a yeller. I don’t point at or belittle a kid and I don’t use foul language. I will have expectations .. doing the little things right. It has worked for me and my father and that is the way I was brought up,” he said.

For athletes that are currently in spring sports and weren't able to attend the meeting, Stamboly said there will be other opportunities to meet with DerCola that they are planning. More details will follow.
