Great Wall   travel club

This past April, the RFA Travel Club ventured to China on a three-city tour to Beijing, Xi’an and Shanghai, where they were submerged in the Chinese culture. They visited the Summer Palace with the world’s longest roofed corridor, marveled at the Forbidden City and Tiananmen Square, admired the Temple of Heaven and took a tai chi lesson by a local Master, which provided much amusement for the locals. They walked on the 3,000-mile Great Wall that was used to defend the Chinese Empire against northern invaders, that began in the 3rd century and saw 6,000 life-sized sculptures known as the Terracotta Warriors, which were created to protect the tomb of Emperor Qin Shi Huangdi, founder of the Qin Dynasty. One of the unique highlights of this trip was a visit to a Chinese secondary school, that started with an international icebreaker game of basketball and followed with an accounting class visitation, where RFA students participated in their class activity of high-speed money counting.

They then toured the Jade Buddha Temple and learned that the Buddhas were brought from Burma by a Christian Monk in the last century. They stepped in the Yu Garden, built in Ming Dynasty, which was a pleasant and well contained classical Chinese garden. From there, they stepped into the future on the Shanghai Bund, which was once considered the “Wall Street of the East” and is now known as the International Architecture Exhibition, due the exquisite skyline. The tour ended with an evening cruise on the Huangpu River, which is the longest river in Shanghai and offered a breathtaking view of Shanghai skyline. China was culturally fascinating, politically relevant and home to the fifth of the world’s population.
