Each year the New York State School Music Association (NYSSMA) sponsors several festivals where students perform as soloists and ensembles for expert adjudicators. Music is graded into difficulty levels with level 1 being the easiest, and level 6 the most challenging.

The Rome Free Academy Bands had a very successful outing at the NYSSMA Organizations Festival in Holland Patent on May 8th and 9th.

The RFA Concert Band earned a Gold rating for their performance of level 4 repertoire: "Prelude and Fugue in G Minor" by JS Bach, "American Visions" by Travis Weller, and the march "Mustang" by Eric Osterling. The RFA Wind Ensemble earned a rating of Gold With Distinction for their performance of level 6 repertoire: "Chester" by William Schuman, "Zion" by Dan Welcher, and "The March from 1941" by John Williams.

The RFA bands have been attending the NYSSMA Major Organizations Festival each spring since 2010. This year marks the first time Concert Band has earned a Gold rating, and the first time Wind Ensemble has earned a rating of Gold with Distinction.

The Concert Band and Wind Ensemble will be performing these pieces in their upcoming spring concert on June 5th at 7:00pm.
