The Rome City School District has once again been honored with the Best Communities for Music Education designation from the NAMM Foundation for its outstanding commitment to music education. Rome joins 583 districts across the country in receiving the prestigious award in 2018. It is the third year in a row that they have received this distinction.

The Best Communities Music Education designation is awarded to districts that demonstrate outstanding achievement in efforts to provide music access and education to all students. To qualify for the Best Communities designation, Rome's music department was assessed on several factors, such as funding, graduation requirements, music class participation, instruction time, facilities, support for the music program, and community music-making programs. These factors evolve over time, so this recognition also honors the work of music educators and administrators from years past. Current Rome music faculty members include RFA: Leanna Guerrieri, Jake Meiss and Michelle Madonia-Rushford and Erica Oshier. Strough: Linda Baker, Beth Bushaw, Anne Gannon and Brittany Lynch. K-6 elementary schools: Juliette Incandela, Tracie Cook, Stephanie Mahoney, Shannon Proctor, Robert Verminski, Shelby Yerrick, Suzie Abreu, Sarah Anderson, Erica McMyler, Aaron Decker, Diane Vicik and Allison Young.

This award recognizes that Rome is leading the way with learning opportunities as outlined in the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA). ESSA recommends music and the arts as important elements of a well-rounded education for all children.

Director of Fine Arts and Engineering Technology, Andrea Falvo said, “This is the third year Rome has applied and received this honor and I am extremely proud of the outstanding talent of both the students and staff in the Rome City School District.” There has been a great deal of collaboration K-12 in the music department.

Superintendent of Schools, Peter C. Blake said: "I’m proud of the exceptional work of our students and staff as they are really deserving of this honor.”

The Rome City School district has a proud tradition of music education stretching back nearly a century.  Many of the current music faculty are themselves products of this legacy.  The district regularly has students accepted into Area All-State, Conference All State, All Eastern, and All National music ensembles.  In addition, each year Rome ensembles earn high marks from adjudicators at Marching Band competitions, Choir Festivals, and the New York State School Music Association Major Organizations festival.
