January Student Accomplishments

Congratulations to Rome City School District students Devin Brown, Paige Pekarski, Joe Keeney and Lillian Gilroy for being featured in the January Student Accomplishment section of the Rome Sentinel! Devin Brown Devin Brown is in the 2nd grade at Staley Elementary School. His assignment from teacher Miss Hayes, was to write an informative piece about the urban community. Devin created a chapter book to teach others about one type of community. He used information he knew about this topic, as well as books to help find additional information to add to his work. devin brown Paige Pekarski


Paige Pekarski is an 8th grader at Strough Middle School. She is a member of the National Junior Honor Society and Student Council. Paige is in honors classes and takes two high school courses (algebra and living environment). Last spring, she was a Broadway dancer in Strough’s production of, ‘Singin in the Rain, Jr.’. In January, Paige’s artwork was selected to be in the Strough Annual Art Exhibit at MVCC. She has volunteered to take photos, along-side mom at RFA Graduation for the last four years.


In addition to academics, Paige is a member of the competition team for Susan Hasty’s School of Dance in Rome. Despite the amount of hours in the studio, she maintains high honor roll status at Strough. Paige volunteers through dance and school functions. Dancing with her troupe at nursing homes, Relay for Life, and America’s Greatest Heart Run and Walk. She is an altar server at St. Mary’s/St. Peter’s Church, and has helped with activities around the community associated with Positively Rome.


School volunteer activities through Strough Student Council include helping Denti students paint pumpkins in October and build gingerbread houses in December. Paige enjoys Math and envisions herself as an engineer in the future. Paige Pekarski


Joe Keeney Joe Keeney is being recognized as a quiet leader and role model by Strough MS for his commitment to his school, community and church.

He has made many friendships as a member of the Modified Soccer, Swim and Track Teams and the Nation-al Jr. Honor Society where he has worked dances, Spaghetti Dinners, Craft Fairs and has volunteered at the Elementary Schools in Rome.


Joseph continues to serve in the community by volunteering at the “Breakfast with Santa” for the Floyd Volunteer Fire Dept and serving at St. Paul’s Catholic Church where he is an Altar Server, has helped out in the City-Wide Vacation Bible School, has walked in the Rome Hunger Walk, has rung the bell for the Salvation Army, has visited the sick with his grandmother at Rome Memorial Hospital and has been in the Christmas Pageant for many years.


A passion for him is playing the trombone. His love for music has led him to be a member of the RFA Marching Band, Strough Pep Band at the Foot-ball games and a member of the OCMEA All-County Middle School Orchestra.


He has taken the opportunities to walk in the Honor America Day Parade, the Veteran Day Parade in Syracuse and the City Tree Lighting Ceremony as a member of the Band. Joe would encourage others to learn to play an instrument!

Lillian Gilroy is an eighth grader at Strough Middle School, where she stays involved with academics and extra-curricular activities.

She maintains a high overall academic average while taking two regents level classes (algebra and living environment), but keeps a balanced schedule by participating in sports, volunteer activities, and clubs.


Lillian has recently become involved with the upcoming Strough production of “My Son, Pinocchio” as a member of the stage crew. She is a member of the National Junior Honor Society and the Strough Student Council. Both organizations have given her the opportunity to volunteer and give back to other schools in the district and as well as local organizations.

Lilly plays the cello and was selected as a member of the 2018 All County Orchestra.

She has played several instruments over the years, including the piano and the clarinet, and is currently teaching herself to play the ukulele.


Lilly also loves art and design. During her free time, she is usually drawing, painting, or reading a good book. Lilly hopes to study art, interior design, or environmentally sound architecture in college. She will volunteer for a week this summer for the Department of Environmental Conservation at a camp in the High Peaks Region of the Adirondacks that focuses on the environment.
