Summer School
The Rome City School District/BOCES Summer School award-winning “444” program has been in full swing the past few weeks. Shown here are students in Melissa McAuslan’s and Len Gratch’s first-grade classrooms participating in a weekly shared reading. This interactive reading experience allows for the children to join and share in reading a book that is guided and supported by the teacher. Each week one book is selected to read/discuss as a whole group, then broken down into several literacy components (phonemic awareness, comprehension, fluency etc.) This daily repetition fosters the motivation to lead read independently.

Throughout the week, the students are also engaged in project-based learning activities related to the story such as guided writing, projects focusing on fine motor development (coloring, cutting, gluing), and re-reading. In this final week of the program, the teacher’s selected “The Little Red Hen” to weave in an authentic learning experience of making bread allowing for the students to come to learn the values of hard work, perseverance, cooperation, responsibility, and other character traits as well.

All the students participated in the two-day process of measuring/mixing the ingredients and the baking of the bread. Science components were also tied in as the children learned about yeast being a good type of fungus and its effect on the food we eat. Students then carried the loaves of bread to the kitchen staff for baking. The students are shown enjoying the fruits of their labor by eating the fresh-out-of-the-oven bread with butter. Having this experience gives the children the ability to make a real-life connection to the story in order to compare and contrast with the characters. One student commented, “I wish every day could be like this”. Chris Whitmore, the Director of Food Services as well as cafeteria staff were happy to help make this happen for the children.
