Shine On!NASA has scheduled the downlink with the International Space Station for SUNY Plattsburgh’s Shine On! Look to the Stars conference during Expedition 65 on May 6, 2021. The downlink is part of a one-day virtual conference available to all PK-8 classrooms throughout New York state and is slated to feature NASA astronauts Megan McArthur and Shane Kimbrough, members of NASA’s Space X Crew-2.

“Look To The Stars: #CharacterCountdown,” is a full-day virtual conference being planned jointly by SUNY Plattsburgh’s Shine On! program and Beekmantown Middle School science teacher, Diana Danville, a New York state-designated master teacher. Over 200 classrooms and 4,000 students have registered to participate in the conference, representing nearly every region of New York state. This event is made possible by Zoom, Cloudsplitter Foundation, The Development Corporation, Plattsburgh Pediatrics, The Foundation of Champlain Valley Physicians Hospital, GlobalFoundries, SeaComm Federal Credit Union, and Aldi.

Conference workshops will be presented by educators and STEM professionals from throughout the United States. The conference will include almost 30 different age-appropriate virtual workshops for teachers to show their classrooms. A small sampling includes HAM radios, BEMER technology in NASA spacesuits, meteorology, Mars rover exploration, chemistry magic, phases of the moon, and more. This program includes a classroom resource kit for teachers with dozens of STEM and character-based instructional activities for use in the three weeks prior to downlink day. The deadline to register is April 30 at www.shineongirl.org. Registration is free and open to any teacher or homeschool parent.

SUNY Plattsburgh’s Shine On! is dedicated to fostering resilience, confidence, and character in young girls by enhancing essential character strengths, developing a toolbox of communication skills, and teaching a better understanding of media in society today. Shine On! has hosted approximately 2,200 young girls since the program began and has taught education outreach programs in almost a dozen schools. The organization has a strong alumnae network of 600 college women who have been mentors, committee members, and workshop presenters over the past 12 years.
