ABC's STEM Kits Donated to Elementary Schools (K-2)

Rome City School District K-2 graders will be learning about Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (S.T.E.M.) in a hands-on way, thanks to the donation of more than 75 ABC’s of S.T.E.M. kits on November 7th. Karyn Burns-Gerling, founder of ABC’S of S.T.E.M. and industry partners were at Staley Elementary to announce the donation to Rome teachers and administrators. Bartell Machinery Systems and Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) generously funded the kits that will benefit K-2 students throughout the district.


“We are honored to support the program and hope the kids really enjoy it,” said Bartell President, Patrick Morocco who was on hand for the announcement along with Regional Human Resources Manager, Pamela Hollenbeck. AFRL Representative, Jeffrey DeMatteis was also in attendance.

“We are thrilled to be able to partner with ABC’s of S.T.E.M., Bartell Machinery, and the AFRL as we provide useful tools for our students, families, and teachers. We are very fortunate to have these opportunities right here in our district,” said Andrea Falvo, director of arts and engineering technology.

“In creating The ABC's of S.T.E.M. program, I wanted to connect students, families, educators and industry through S.T.E.M. introduction, but in a fun, memorable and efficient way.  Our program offers fun, family engaging and student empowering introduction to S.T.E.M. concepts, so they can recognize and learn early on how S.T.E.M. impacts and influences their everyday lives, and then have that unique experience celebrated in front of their classmates as The ABC's of S.T.E.M. Student of the Week. For just a few minutes a night, and a few minutes of classroom time, each student and family will have the opportunity to take pause, engage in some good old-fashioned hands-on fun that connects their unique experiences of S.T.E.M. learning from home, to classroom, to industry right in our very own communities,” said Burns-Gerling. 

Throughout the week and at the family’s own pace, activities are done from the classroom bag, all encouraging family engagement and fun. At the end of the week, the student returns with the classroom bag and their poster, and presents to their classmates about their weekly adventures. K-2 grade teachers in the District will be utilizing the kits.
