TikTok Challenge - 12/17
Dear RCSD Families and Staff:

Earlier today we were alerted to the circulation of a nationwide TikTok social media challenge. The purpose of this challenge originated in California as an attempt to get as many kids to skip school as possible and has developed into an attempt to create disruption in schools throughout the country by threatening violence on December 17th. We are reaching out to our community to assure folks that we are aware of the challenge, and that the Oneida County Sheriff's Office and Rome Police Department are aware as well. The Sheriff's Office has confirmed that, at this time, there have been no specific threats toward any school or district within our region.

As always, the safety and security of our students and staff are our top priority. We will continue to monitor social media and work with local law enforcement agencies if a direct concern arises. In the meantime, I continue to encourage parents to speak with their children regarding their cyber-footprint and other relevant topics such as:
  • reassuring your child that school staff is aware of this current concern and there are no direct threats against any Rome schools.
  • remind your child that inappropriate and threatening online behavior has serious consequences.
  • be aware of your child's social media accounts, oftentimes children have multiple accounts on multiple platforms.
  • remind your child that social media platforms may feel anonymous, however, everyone's identity can be revealed by law enforcement.
  • notify the police and school officials of any concerning information that you may find on social media.
Thank you once again for your continued partnership in keeping our schools and community safe. Please remember, if you see something, say something.
