This month we recognize the Food Services staff in the Rome City School District for their hard work in keeping our students fed. We appreciate their dedication and so do families throughout the Rome community. In March, due to the Coronavirus pandemic, our schools shifted to Grab and Go meals. “My staff are serving close to 1,000 breakfast and 1,000 lunches daily,” said Chris Whitmore, School Nutrition Program Director.

There are 37 Food Service workers throughout the District and they start their day around 7:30 a.m. to prepare for the 11 a.m. lunch and breakfast crowd. Staff wrap up around 1:30 p.m. In between they reconnect with parents, grandparents and students who pick up meals. “I miss seeing the kids,” said Tracy Bird-Remillard, who has been with Food Services for 7 years. “They call us the bag ladies,” said Tammie Smith, 11-year veteran of Food Services. Both these ladies, along with Selina Tardugno, work at Ridge Mills. “We have had families come by with thank you cards, pictures, cookies and even masks, it really keeps you going and puts a smile on your face,” said Tardugno, a Food Service employee for 3 years.

“The biggest change for us has been, of course, wearing masks and single serve items. Being that it is Grab and Go, we are using lunch bags and plastic bags. Everything is packaged by itself. There is no direct contact with the products,” said Whitmore.

“We are trying to do the most we can for the students as they are doing remote learning. An example of this is that we are providing hot meals for Grab and Go. Not just cold meals. That is something we have been very proud of,” he said.

Grab and Go meals are located at all of the RCSD elementary schools and at South Rome Senior Center. These meals are free for all Rome students thanks to USDA waiver. https://www.romecsd.org/district/food_services/special_programs
