“I wasn’t born to ‘just teach,’ I was born to inspire others, to change people, and to never give up; even when faced with challenges that seem impossible.” This powerful statement encapsulates the essence of a great teacher and perfectly describes Christine Scharf, an English teacher at Rome Free Academy (RFA) who dedicated five decades of her life to the Rome City School District. Retiring in June 2024, Scharf’s career leaves a legacy of inspiration and perseverance, celebrated through the heartfelt “Thank You Notes” project.
Christine Scharf has always shied away from the spotlight, preferring to focus on her students and their success. My connection to her began when I captured a memorable moment of her with a student, Chris DePaula, at the 2023 RFA graduation. Recognizing her profound impact as a mentor, I had the photo printed, framed, and mailed to her. A week later, I received a beautiful note from her (that I still have on my refrigerator at home).
Flash forward to the start of the school year. There was buzz that Christine Scharf was retiring after 50 years! The PR hat went on, and I only wanted a great story for the press. But that would soon be a challenge as Christine and I have something in common… we don’t like the spotlight.
Conversations with her colleagues revealed their deep respect and admiration for her, yet time constraints and busy schedules delayed any immediate action. As spring approached, I revisited the idea during a conversation with RFA Assistant Principal Kristie Boisen. We discussed the heartfelt note I had received from Scharf and brainstormed ways to honor her remarkable 50-year tenure.
Inspired by the idea, Kristie mentioned that teachers planned to write thank-you notes to Christine. This sparked a larger vision: what if we also extended the invitation to her students and alums? Thus, the “Thank You Notes” project was born.
The response was overwhelming. Notes were poured in from current students and alums, each one a testament to the profound and lasting impact Christine Scharf had on their lives. Through their words, the accurate measure of her influence became evident: she was not just a teacher but a mentor, guide, and inspiration.
Christine Scharf’s legacy will continue through the countless lives she touched over her illustrious career. The “Thank You Notes” project is a testament to her enduring influence and her indelible mark on the Rome City School District.
