Black History Month

On February 11, the Rome City School District (RCSD), in partnership with the African American Heritage Association (AAHA) and the Rome NAACP, sponsored a powerful Black History Month celebration at Rome Free Academy. This year’s theme, "African Americans and Labor," honored the invaluable contributions of Black workers throughout history.

The evening brought together a strong show of community support, featuring inspiring speakers, performances, and reflections. Ms. Marilyn Hawkins and Mr. Willie Talmage from AAHA, Jacqueline Nelson from the NAACP, and RCSD Superintendent of Schools Nerlande Anselme shared meaningful messages, while keynote speaker Dr. Clemmie Harris from Utica University delivered a thought-provoking address.

Student MCs guided the event, which showcased performances by the RFA Concert Choir, the Utica Royalties dance group, and other artistic expressions celebrating Black history and culture. The RFA Concert Choir also performed "Lift Every Voice and Sing," often referred to as the Black national anthem.

Following the event, attendees enjoyed refreshments. There was also an opportunity to view Black History Month-themed artwork, further enriching the celebration of history, culture, and community.
