RFA Students Compete at the Oneida County Envirothon

On May 7, students from the RFA SUNY ESF AP Biology class (taught by Mrs. Calogero) and the Global Environment class (taught by Mr. Buchanan) participated in the Oneida County Envirothon, hosted at the Utica Zoo by the Oneida County Soil and Water Conservation District.

Our three teams competed against thirty teams from districts all over Oneida County by taking five subject area tests: Current Issues, Wildlife Study, Aquatic Ecology, Land and Soil Conservation, and Forestry. In addition, each team prepared a slideshow presentation about solar power.

The teams consisted of:

  • RFA Team 1: Ellyza Minicozzi, Kenneth Saunders, Jaylene Decker, and Alana DeJosie

  • RFA Team 2: Kelsey Fuller, Napoleon Winn, Michael Sanger, and Victoria Figueroa

  • RFA Team 3: Rachel Catello, Elliot Trophia, Danielle Klepadio, Aiden Winters, and Michaelanne Allen

RFA Team 2 placed first among all teams in the Aquatic Ecology test and second in the Current Issues test.

RFA Team 3 was one of three teams selected to present their slideshow and oral presentation about the benefits of Photovoltaic Solar Energy panels to the judges. This team ultimately won the entire competition, earning the right to compete in the state competition later this month at SUNY Cortland.

Additionally, each member will receive a $1,000 Ted Willson college scholarship courtesy of the Oneida County Soil and Water Conservation District in Oriskany.
