The Rome City School District is launching the Million Word Reading Challenge to help keep our K-8 students engaged in reading and increase our student reading proficiency from January through June 2025. Students will read books from their Accelerated Reader or myON apps and their words read will automatically be counted and added to their building's goal. As an added incentive, students who participate in the New York State exams in April and May will receive an additional 5,000 reader points per student per test taken. Accelerated Reader and myON are a personalized digital reading platform that provides students with unlimited access to thousands of digital books that are dynamically matched to their individual interests, grade, and reading level. Students can access books in both English and Spanish by logging in through ClassLink.
In June, students who participated in the Million Word Reader challenge will be put into a winners pool based on the amount of reader points they receive.
Criteria for winners pool:
● School reached the Million Word Club
● Student participated (for every 5,000 words read, an entry is placed)
● Take the state exam (5,000 reader points for each exam taken)
Renaissance (the platform used for Accelerated Reader and myON) has provided the following prizes:
● Apple Watch
● Sonos Speaker
● Projector
● Jewelry
● Laptop bags and more!
